This is Rie's reading of 'Hyakunin Isshu.' The term means a collection
of hundred poems by one hundred different poets but to general
Japanese it practically means Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, one selected
by Fujiwara Teika in the thirteen century (note that he selected poems
of various era spanning roughly 600 years so the oldest ones are from
the seventh century). As all the poems are in ancient Japanese, they
are hard to understand fully even to Japanese although some them are
taught (or explained) at school.
Card games ('karuta') were derived from it later in the history and
some of them are played even now, especially at the New Year. The
game is often featured in anime/manga etc for their "New Year"
episodes.
An important question to me is whether the girl of the cover
illustration is supposed to be Rie herself ^_^;;
Unfortunately the CD is rather cheaply made (well, the low price is a
good thing, though) and I think it remains to be purely a collector's
item. Due to the limitation of the CD format, Tracks 98 and 99 have
two poems each.
NHT rating:
1.-99.
